Herbal Medicine is the use of herbs for their therapeutic or medical value. It is the oldest form of healthcare known to mankind. Herbs have been used by all cultures throughout history as a fundamental part of the progress of modern civilization. By observation, early cultures valued the great diversity of plants available for medical use. As time went on, these cultures carefully gathered information on herbs and developed a well-defined herbal pharmacopoeia.

Herbal medicine is comprised of two disciplines, Asian (also called Chinese) and American. They are quite different on the type of herbs used as well as how they use herbs. Chinese Herbal medicine practiced by Doctors of Oriental Medicine (OMD) has been formally practice in China for 3500 years. The Asian were the first to discover the value of the synergistic effects of the herbs for treating different health concerns or disease. The herbs are divided into different categories. Each group of herbs performs a certain function. By using multiple herbs, they work together to direct the body back to a state of balance, also known as homeostasis. This allowed the Doctors of Oriental Medicine to treat the whole body as opposed to treating the symptoms.

American herbs are used singularly to address a specific condition much like drugs are used today. It’s only been in the past 30 to 50 years that formulas of multiple herbs have been put together. In fact, about 25% of the prescription drugs dispensed in the United States contain at least one active ingredient derived from plant material. Some are made from plant extracts; others are synthesized to mimic a natural plant compound. Unfortunately, when a portion of a plant is extracted it becomes toxic to the body. Mother Nature's intent is for plants to be taken in its whole form allowing our bodies to utilize the herb and benefit from the natural composition. The Chinese Herbal Discipline is dedicated to use herbs the way Mother Nature intended.
